Uxmal

We are in Mexico for the next couple of months, in the Yucatan state close to Merida, having rented one bedroom Casita located in an AirB&B which has a very nice courtyard and pool all within the walled property. This is nice retreat when a Norte (storm/wind from the north) blows-in or when the Malacon/Beach is busy with tourist, normally on a weekend.

While here we’ve had an opportunity to visit Uxmal and a local Chocolate Factory, this was a day trip organised by our friend Dave who also travels here for the winter. Uxmal is approximately 1 1/2 hour drive southwest of where we are staying.

Uxmal (Yucatec Maya: Óoxmáal) is an ancient Maya city of the classical period located in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Palenque, Chichen, and Calakmul in Mexico, Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatamala. It is located in the Puuc region of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, and is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region’s dominant architectural style. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its significance. (Wikipedia)

The Pyramid in Uxmal is the first that we have seen that had rounded corners, all others we have visited had sharp or square corners. We have seen rounded vertical walls at Edzna, located in Campeche when we last visited this area in our Camper two years ago.

We paid our entrance fee and proceeded to the archaeological site.

This is our first view of the first Pyramid of Uxmal.

Continuing further into the site.

Looking back towards the rear of the pyramid.

From here we moved through the arch from the square into the ballgame area of the site.

We walked through into an area that is still under reconstruction.

Now it’s time to head back towards the entrance.

And we did not forget the obligatory selfie.

Next: The Chocolate Factory
