Bahia de los Angeles

When we left San Ignacio, still travelling with Juan Carlos & Lupita, we decided that we would take the less travelled route out to Punta Abreojos located on the Pacific coast where we spent a night at a beach south of town by the local airstrip.

From here the pavement ended as we drove up the coast, this dirt road is approximately 100km/60 miles to Bahia Asuncion, we passed through the small village of San Hipolito which had a quaint church. Once at Bahia Asuncion we picked up the pavement again continuing out to Bahia de Tortugas.

After a five hour drive we arrived at Bahia Tortugas and set up camp for a couple of nights at the beach.

Can you see the campers in the distance?

There was also a nice sunsets here.

We left relatively early from here to go to the end of the road which was another 26km/16 miles down another dirt road to Punta Eugenia. They farmed Lobster and Abalone here, it takes 10 years before an Abalone is ready for harvest by the local Cooperative. They harvested 250 Ton(250,000kg)/551156lbs of lobster last season (September to February). They also have a Hyperbaric (decompression) chamber here which can accommodate up to five people. Interesting what you find at the end of the road and in out of the way places.

Once back on the pavement we headed to Guerrero Negro for diesel, water and some groceries and then out to some Sand Dunes for the night just north of the Baja California Sur/Baja California boarder.

Heading east towards MX1 at Vizcaino.

We had a fire this night but it was so cold we could only sit out for a couple of hours. We did manage to put some papas (potatoes) on the fire and then enjoy them in the comfort of Lupita and Juan Carlos’ camper, fresh bacon bits, cheese and sour cream, so good on a cold and windy night. Lupita also made us coffee with Kahlua, which helped to warm us as well, we call this Happy Coffee 😊.

Next morning, we packed up and headed up MX1 to the turn-off to Bahia de Los Angeles where we were parting ways with Juan Carlos & Lupita.

At this intersection Juan Carlos discovered that the nut on his front driver’s side wheel bearing had come loose. Between Juan Carlos and Stewart they had the tools and new grease to re-tighten and repack the bearing so Juan Carlos & Lupita could make it Phoenix to see there son before heading home to Sonora, but not before we all had some BBQ’d steak in tacos.

Last photo as we say our see you later’s.

Next: Baja California

  1. This life on the road looks good on you two. We have plans for next year, won’t be as adventurous as your travels but hitting the road for a while.
